The Black Girls Rock Award show is an evening of Black women honoring their fellow Black woman. Everyone from Shonda Rhimes to Rihanna was in attendance of the award show this year. It took place in New Jersey this year and honored multiple women for their contributions in their respective industries.

Awardees included singer Gladys Knight, actors Amandla Stenberg, Danai Gurira and Black Lives Matter founders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. Founder of the show Beverley Bond delivered a very telling speech on the importance of Black women being shown in a positive light. Actress Traci Ellis Ross kept the show going as the host for the evening.

Amandla Stenberg has been one of the many faces behind the ‘Black Girl Magic’ initiative. This year she came forward and spoke on cultural appropriation in the media and showed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The 17-year-old Los Angeles native rocked a Moschino suit as she accepted her award. During her speech she explained how she uses social media to express her views. Stenberg also talked about how she hopes to change the narrative of Black actresses.

Black Girls Rock was an evening full of great energy with an even greater message. The evening included performances from Brandy, Monica, Gladys Knight, Floetry, Jazmine Sullivan, Andra Day and Corrine Bailey Rae. The evening was one full of style and grace.
