After boldly announcing that he’s leaving Cash Money Records, Jay Sean drops a new song and music video.
Jay Sean premiered “Tears in the Ocean” yesterday on Billboard.com, a track from his upcoming independent mixtape “The Mistress II” dropping in November. Jay Sean has a history of leaving labels; some of you might recall he was briefly signed to Virgin Records in the early 2000s. However, Sean says he ended things with Cash Money amicably and is still on good terms with CEOs Slim and Baby. Sean said, “They believed in me and my talent and our partnership obviously garnered a lot of pop success,” but that he lost sight of his musical goal. Sean said, “It got to the point where I was chasing pop success and ‘the smash’ when really my heart wasn’t in it anymore.” This realization prompted Sean to return to his R&B roots and remember why he got into the game. “Tears in the Ocean” was a collaborative effort co-written by Jared Cotter and Negin Djafari, filmed by his brother and co-produced by his wife.
